We all love to see those gorgeous bathrooms in the movies, right? Unfortunately, most of our bathrooms could never look like that because of one simple factor: Size. The average person’s bathroom is just two small. So what can you do to improve the looks of this essential room without knocking out a wall to make it bigger? There are several steps you can take.
Number one on our list is to replace your current too-big vanity with a single bathroom vanity. It’s amazing how many people overlook this easy step. Too many bathrooms have a double sink vanity even though there’s not the size for it. Replace that with a single vanity and watch the room virtually grow before your eyes! There are wall-mounted sinks that add even more space. Or if you want a standard floor model vanity, there are ultra-thin ones that are no more than 16 inches wide. Talk about a space-saver!
Another suggestion for making your bathroom appears bigger: Clean out the clutter! Having items strewn all over the vanity, the bathtub, on the floor, etc., creates an absolute eyesore. And it gives the illusion of having less space than you actually have.
Getting good lighting is third on our list of ideas for redecorating your small bathroom. When you have the combination of a small bathroom along with inadequate lighting, it comes across as being dingy and cramped. Adding extra lighting seems to add extra space to the room. You might spend a little money on wall-mounted sconces, selecting a style which matches your overall bathroom decor. A ceiling-hung fixture can also add a dramatic flood of light.
Along these same lines, make the colors in your small bathroom as light and bright as possible. For much the same reason as increasing the lighting, bright rooms appear to be larger. It’s an effective illusion you should try.
And finally, consider the possibility of installing some glass shelves in your bathroom. These will be perfect for holding many of those bathroom accessories and medicines that your new, smaller vanity might not hold. But in addition to that, glass, because it’s transparent, is almost invisible. So you’ll have the benefits of more shelf space, and yet, you’ll have the illusion of more room than if you use a standard cabinet to hold these items.
None of these ideas physically expands the size of your bathroom, but all make it appear that the room is roomier than it otherwise is. And the use of a single vanity does literally give you more room to move around!
