Tips for Buying a Vanity with a Glass Vessel Sink

Something about glass decorations just seem magical. And when the glass is used for the sink in your bathroom vanity, they lend an air of charm and sophistication to your bathroom. But before you buy a glass-vessel sink, from us or anyone else, keep these suggestions in mind:

 1) First, don’t worry about the sink being too fragile.  You need to understand how durable–and how fragile–glass sinks are.  With no exceptions, glass vessel sinks are constructed of regular glass which has been tempered. This means they have been heated to the point of becoming five to seven times stronger than the glass would otherwise have been.  In addition, the glass is relatively thick.  Therefore, there’s no need to be too squeamish about conducting your normal bathroom chores.  Unless you’re very abusive in your bathroom time, the sink will handle what you dish out.

 2) Know how much space you have to work with. You’ll find most glass sinks to be around 18 to 24 inches across, with 20 inches the average. They are usually 6 to 8 inches deep (about the length of your hand, from wrist to middle finger).  So make sure you have the necessary space in your bathroom and vanity to accommodate the glass vessel sink.

 3) Think about your bathroom traffic.  While glass sinks are durable, it is still glass we’re talking about.  For that reason, you might want to think twice before putting a glass vessel in your children’s bathroom.  Kids tend to find ways of breaking anything that is at all breakable, and of course, it could be dangerous if they find a way to break a glass sink.  However, a glass vessel sink is perfect for a guest or main bathroom, as it’s sure to impress your visitors. And of course, it will be loved by you and your grown family members, as well.

 4) Don’t go over-budget.  A glass vessel sink might run anywhere between $90 to a couple of thousand.  A good rule is to start by considering the size you need, then the price you can afford. Only after those two issues are settled do you start thinking about the style you’d like to have–since you must first make sure the style you love works within your budget and your bathroom’s boundaries.
